PSI Adding Warning Labels to Comply with California Proposition 65

In late 2023, the State of California added Bisphenol S (BPS) to its Prop 65. BPS is commonly used as a developer and stabilizer in thermal paper, and can also be found in other everyday items, such as plastic baby bottles, microwave safe dishes, mobile phone screens, clothing, food cans, etc.

To comply with the state’s ruling, any company doing business in the State of California is required to provide warning labels to any product which knowingly contains BPS or any item listed in Prop 65. As it relates to the thermal paper products PSI provides to customers, businesses have until December 29, 2024 to comply with warning requirements.

As a result, PSI has made the decision to add a warning label to be in compliance with Prop 65 requirements to all thermal paper products knowingly produced containing the chemical BPS, regardless of where the product is shipped. Products with warning labels will begin shipping to customers starting in Q3 2024. Bond and carbonless items do not contain BPS and are not subject to warning labels.

In terms of current inventory and potentially impacted items held by customers that you may hold and other items which may be impacted, we strongly recommend that you take the necessary steps to comply with Prop 65 by the deadline.

PSI offers a full line of phenol-free thermal paper products, which comply with Prop 65, and are not subject to the warning label requirement.

Our goal remains to provide you with the best quality products, on time, at competitive prices, while complying with legislative requirements. Our team will continue to keep you informed with additional market developments related to the products we supply to your business.

PSI Offers Eco-Friendly Receipt Paper Alternative for a Safer Choice

SPRINGBORO, OH – Paper Systems, Inc. provides a wide variety of paper rolls, including POS phenol-free thermal receipt paper, which is eco-friendly and safer to handle. Non-top coated phenol-free grades also provide greater resistance to UV light, enabling them to maintain image quality for up to ten years.

“Phenol-free paper is a great option for retailers who need their receipts to last many years,” said Lee Wagoner, Executive Vice President of Paper Systems, Inc. “For example, if a company prints warranty information on its receipts, it’s important to the company and its customers that the printed receipts last longer than the warranty.”

Wagoner also noted that as more retailers invest in phenol-free paper, the pricing will become more competitive.
